RedZone Awareness Month (August-September)

The “RedZone” refers to the time between move-in and Thanksgiving break where over 50% of sexual assaults are reported to occur on college campuses nationwide. More vulnerable students include first- and second- year students, along with transfer students. CARE hosts events and collaborates with campus partners on programming designed to educate and empower Boilermakers in the prevention and elimination of sexual violence within our community.

Contributing Factors

With the reported national statistics, CARE wants to ensure our Boilermaker community is familiar with the possible contributing factors.

  • Newness of their environment
  • Introduction to party/drinking culture
  • Lack of awareness to safety and support on campus
  • Unfamiliar social dynamics

Connecting with CARE

It is important for students to be familiar with campus resources and participate in educational opportunities to assist with making positive and healthy choices for themselves. CARE offers multiple events for students to engage in within the first two months of the fall term.

  • YesFest: A carnival-style event held as BGR attendees arrive on campus, focused on consent education in a fun, engaging atmosphere.
  • UR RedZone: In partnership with University Residences, CARE offers bystander intervention, consent, and prevention education to students living in residence halls during the first weeks of school.
  • RedZone Tailgating: Leading up to kickoff at the first three home football games, CARE hosts tailgate events on Cary Quad lawn to raise awareness about the Red Zone and prevention strategies.

The beginning of the school year is an exciting time, and we want all our students to feel safe with the right tools and education. For more information:
